"Being a trustee on a charity you really care about is important. I have been so fortunate to find Breck Foundation - their mission resonates so much with my desire to make the internet a safer and better place." We love hearing news from people who have volunteered or become trustees through our platform, having found a good cause that aligns with their values and concerns for the world. If you're wondering if trusteeship could be for you, Stuart's reflections are worth a read.

Senior Manager of Security Liaison & Industry Collaboration at BT ** Distinguished Engineer at BT ** Board Trustee at Breck Foundation ** Chair of GSMA SAS ISIG ** Aspiring Cyber NED/Advisor

It's been a few months now since I started as a Trustee with Breck Foundation and I wanted to share some thoughts, experiences and reflections to encourage others to think about Trustee work... 1. Being a trustee on a charity you really care about is important. I have been so fortunate to find Breck Foundation - their mission resonates so much with my desire to make the internet a safer and better place. 2. I've been amazed and surprised at how trustee's can truly affect positive change. Being able to approve (i) an employee assistance program for our staff and (ii) a cost-of-living pay increase to help our staff is wonderful and, whilst we had to make those decisions facing into a view of financial responsibility, it does leave me thinking we've done some good. 3. Having a great team. I love my BT team - they're awesome - but I love the team at Breck too. A relatively new board, a Chair (you're on it Rupert Coles) that joined the same time that I did and a relatively new CEO (great job so far Erica Thornton (she/her)), coupled with our amazing founder, Lorin LaFave Gordon and more trustees on the way. I truly believe we're setting ourselves up for growth and success. 4. Patience grasshopper. (that dates me). It took me time to adjust and find my feet and get into the flow and cadence of Board meetings. Give yourself time to learn and find your space within the Board. I'm really enjoying my trustee journey and I do genuinely encourage others to think about doing similar. It's a great way of gaining some new skills and perspectives and helping you grow, but also a way of giving back and sharing experiences and suggestions. For those looking for a way to start on the journey, my route was to register on Reach Volunteering and see what was out there. I found it took me, maybe, 6-8 weeks before the opportunity with Breck Foundation came up. Usual caveats that other routes to trustee roles are available etc etc. What are you waiting for - give it a go. Do something amazing and make a difference.

I'd like to nip this one in the bud, early doors. Getting On Board's latest selection of free webinars is booking up a treat, but the lowest one so far is "What can trustees do about climate change?" which we're doing with NPC (New Philanthropy Capital), Liz Gadd and Janet Thorne. Now, we've only just opened for bookings and it's ages away (5th June) but I'm concerned that we trustees have our heads in the sand about the biggest crisis out there. This session isn't particularly for environmental charities or knowledgable climate campaigners, it's for us usual trustees wondering where we can have impact on climate change. So, your help please - come along, tell others, tell us what would stop you coming. Booking link in the comments.
